AUGUSTA — A 22-year-old Saco woman has been identified by state police as the driver who was killed Saturday night after she drove the wrong way on Interstate 95 and collided head-on with a pair of cars.
Sierra Prescott died instantly in the crash, which happened about 8:30 p.m. in the northbound lane between Exits 109 and 112. That section of the highway was closed for about three hours. The crash also injured three others, one critically, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Steve McCausland.
McCausland said police reconstructed the accident on Saturday, and the “main focus” of work Sunday would be determining where Prescott was when her vehicle entered the highway and where she was before she got in the car.
McCausland said he was aware of public Facebook posts on Prescott’s page that alluded to consuming alcohol at an Augusta restaurant with her mother around 6 p.m. Saturday, but he did not say if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Sierra’s mother, Megan Prescott, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A second woman who was a passenger in one of the other cars — Shubha Raju, 44, of Bangor — was critically injured, police said. She was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Officials from CMMC could not confirm her condition around noon Sunday.
Raja was a passenger in a car driven by Vikram Kumar, 40, of Bangor, and the third vehicle involved was driven by Frederick Homans, 61, of Northport. Kumar and Homans were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with minor injuries.
