Joyce Marlene (Emmons) Anttila

WINDSOR – Joyce Marlene (Emmons) Anttila passed away on Jan. 15, 2020 at Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta, after a long battle with dementia.

Joyce was born on Oct. 19, 1934 in Weymouth, Mass. to Harold Emmons and Jeannette (Welcome) Emmons.

Joyce contracted a serious streptococcus infection at a young age before antibiotics were widely available. She spent most of her childhood in and out of Boston Children’s Hospital but she never let this get her down or set her back. She excelled in school and graduated from Whitman High School in 1953. She loved to entertain and traveled with the USO performing all over New England.

She married Roger Anttila on Oct. 28, 1956 and they resided in Bryantville, Mass. where they welcomed their first daughter, Stacey Diane on Dec. 1, 1959. They moved to Cape Cod in 1963 and welcomed their second daughter, Darby Lee on Feb. 15, 1964.

Joyce worked as a medical transcriptionist most of her life; a profession she loved. She worked many years at Cape Cod Hospital until moving to Maine in 1987 where she continued her transcriptionist work at Togus VA Hospital until her retirement.

Joyce enjoyed traveling across the country over the years. Joyce had a great sense of humor and she loved animals (especially cats), great movies, music, good books, long car rides and the Boston Red Sox.

She is survived by her husband, Roger of Windsor; daughter, Stacey and her husband Steven Pizzuti of South Dennis, Mass., daughter, Darby and her husband Ron Rock of Windsor; granddaughter, Holly Rock of Winslow and granddaughter, Heather Rock of Denver, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren. Also, her beloved Siamese cat, Peanut.

MaineGeneral Hospice for being there during her last days. A special thank you to Cathy Lincoln and Susan Thornton who treated Joyce like she was their own mother.
