Portland police said a man was shot and wounded Tuesday afternoon during an altercation on Munjoy Hill.

The shooting victim, a 20-year-old man from Portland, was treated at Maine Medical Center and released, according to a news release by Portland police spokesman Lt. Robert Martin.

The shooting happened behind 54 North St., in the area of Fort Sumner Park, just after 3:20 p.m. Portland police responded after people reported hearing a gunshot.

Witnesses said a group of young males had been arguing and that they heard a gunshot. By the time officers arrived, the group, including the victim, had fled on foot and in vehicles.

“Witnesses described the group as consisting of several black males all with youthful appearances,” Martin said.

A pool of blood was located on one of the trails that runs between Fort Sumner Park and Sheridan Street. The victim made it to the hospital on his own and officers found him there, Martin said. The male was treated and released.

“The incident does not appear to be a random act and at this time police do not believe the public is at risk,” Martin said.
