MOBILE, Ala. – Mr. David Richard Longstaff, of Mobile, Ala. died peacefully on Aug. 19, 2020.
He was born in Waterville on July 10, 1939, the son of Cecil and Evelyn Longstaff.
He was predeceased by his parents; and grandson, Matthew Yarbrough.
He is survived by his beloved wife, of 62 years, and high school sweetheart, Marilyn Belanger Longstaff. He is also survived by his sister, Connie Warren of Winslow; five children, Pam Richardson (Jim) of Headland, Ala., Mark Longstaff of Columbus, Ga., John Longstaff, Cheryl Moore (Dean), and Kelley Hicks (Bill) of Mobile, Ala. In addition, “Bapa” was blessed with five grandchildren, Zachery Yarbrough (Areal), Katelyn Andrews (Charles), Tyler Richardson, Sydney Moore, Tate Moore, and five bonus grandchildren Bill, Tara (Nathan), Tiffany, Johnathan (Nancy) and James Hicks. He also has four great-grandchildren, Reagan, Weston, Jordan and Jayden. David was blessed with a large extended family including many nieces, nephews and sister-in-law.
He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield where he was the president of his senior class and excelled in sports. David played quarterback on the football team, played baseball and basketball. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1960, where he played quarterback as well.
He was in the Merchant Marines for two years. He worked for International Paper Company and lived in Wilton; Bislig, Philippines; Dothan, Ala. and finally Mobile.
He retired from IP at the age of 55 and enjoyed traveling by RV across the country with Marilyn and their friends; oftentimes spending the winters in Sebring, Fla. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman.
Due to the pandemic, there will be a private funeral Mass at Our Savior Catholic Church.
