OXFORD —A Norway man was arrested on multiple charges Wednesday night after a six-hour standoff on French Road.

State police said Brian Cabral, 42, had been the subject of an ongoing drug investigation in Oxford Hills. Recently an arrest warrant charging aggravated trafficking in fentanyl was obtained by state police investigators. He was also on probation, police said, for drug trafficking and had bail conditions.

Police said Cabral has been well aware state police have been looking for him.

The drama began about 10 a.m., police said, when Cabral went to a business in Lewiston and contacted a protected party named in his bail conditions. Cabral fled the area before police arrived, according to state police Spokeswoman Katharine England. A vehicle description was provided.

Troopers began to check known locations frequented by Cabral, police said. About 2 p.m., Cabral’s vehicle was located at a residence on French Road, off Route 121 in Welchville village. Oxford Police and Norway Police assisted state police with surveillance of the residence. Because of Cabral’s criminal history, police said, the seriousness of the new charges and the presence of firearms inside the residence, the state police Tactical Team was assembled and the state police Crisis Negotiator Team was sent to the scene.

The homeowner came out of the house without incident, police said, and confirmed that Cabral was inside the residence. After several hours of communicating with police, Cabral came out peacefully and surrendered to troopers.

Cabral was taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris on charges of aggravated drug trafficking, domestic terrorizing and violating conditions of release.

Cabral was the focus of a similar standoff 15 years ago in Auburn.

Wednesday’s standoff resulted in traffic snarls around the scene as ambulances staged at The Big Apple on Main Street and police continued to stream into the area. Police shut down a section of Route 121 as the situation developed.
