Jim Smith

SHAPLEIGH – Jim Smith died on Jan. 7, 2021, at a Tampa Hospital from complications caused by Covid. He was born on Aug. 26, 1947, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Robert P. and Mabel (Searles) Smith. Jim grew up at Salmon Point, Bridgton, Maine, until his parents moved to Florida. He graduated from Dixie Hollins High School, class of 1965. He married Kathleen Glynn in 1973 and they celebrated 47 years of marriage In April. He was employed for 30 years at New England Telephone/Verizon, from which he retired. He was a lifetime member of the Sanford, Maine Elks. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren and taking boat rides on Square Pond in Shapleigh. He was an avid Sports fan, especially the Boston Bruins and nothing pleased him more than to go to the games with his family. He collected hockey cards and figures as a hobby. He played the drums, enjoyed rock and roll music, and watching sons, Jimmy and Harley, as well as grandson, Isaac play music. He also was a Beatles fan and their music was a constant on his truck radio. He spent the winters in Florida with his wife and enjoyed participating in various activities in the park. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Robert Smith and Thomas Smith. Surviving in addition to his wife, Kathleen Smith, are his sons, James Smith and his wife Cheryl, of Belgrade, and Harland Smith of Sanford, Fla., and six grandchildren, Paige Smith, Jackson Smith, Grace Smith, Isaac Smith, Gweneth Smith and Andrew Smith, two sisters, Ann Robbins, Bridgton, Maine and Susan McCullough, Rural Valley, Pa. He was known for his quick wit and outgoing personality. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
