JAY — A local man was killed Sunday night after the vehicle he was driving struck a tree on Route 133, police said.
Police said 24-year-old Eban Johnston was found dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash.
A dispatcher directed a Jay police officer about 11 p.m. to be on the lookout for a vehicle operating erratically and speeding. That vehicle had turned onto Route 133 or Franklin Road from Farmington, according to a statement released by Chief Richard E. Caton IV.
Caton said that shortly after that, Officer Rex Schweighofer discovered a southbound 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Johnston had struck a tree just north of Lomie Rivers Road.
There were no passengers. The SUV had left the roadway to the right on a slight curve to the left, Caton wrote.
After striking the tree, the Jeep rolled over, coming to rest against another tree, he wrote.
“At this time, it appears speed is a factor in the crash,” Caton wrote.
The crash remained under investigation Monday.
Jay police were assisted by Wilton Police Department, Livermore Falls Police Department, Maine State Police, Auburn Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, Jay Fire Department and NorthStar Ambulance, according to Caton.
