A husband and wife from Madison were taken to the hospital Friday night with non-life-threatening injuries after their van collided head-on with a car that was trying to improperly pass other vehicles on Middle Road in Fairfield, police said.
Connor Gorney, 20, also of Madison, was driving a 2009 Ford Focus sedan south on Middle Road near the intersection with Back Road just before 5:48 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to Fairfield police Sgt. Patrick Mank, who said a citation against Gorney is pending because he didn’t have insurance.
“From my investigation, it looks like he was trying to pass a vehicle or two,” Mank said.
Meanwhile, a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq van, being driven north by Ellen Belanger, 56, of Madison, tried to swerve to avoid the Focus but was unsuccessful, according to Mank.
“It was a head-on collision — front end to front end,” he said.
Belanger and her husband, Daniel Belanger, 63, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, were taking by Delta Ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, with Ellen Belanger complaining of chest pain and Daniel Belanger complaining of leg pain, according to Mank.
“(Gorney) stated he didn’t have any pain — no injuries,” he said. “He was not transported.”
Both vehicles were destroyed “due to disability damage,” according to Mank.
“Improper passing led to the crash,” he said.
He said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash.
Mank and Fairfield police Officers Nolan Allen and Jerico Champagne responded to the scene, as did the Fairfield Fire Department. The road had to be closed down temporarily until the vehicles were towed, according to Mank.
The crash occurred in front of 306 Middle Road, just north of the Back Road intersection, he said.
