Joan Elizabeth Stockford Fontaine

WINTHROP – Joan Elizabeth Stockford Fontaine, 91, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, after a period of declining health.

Joan was born April 1, 1929, in New York City, to Frank and Margaret (Redling) Stockford. When she was a child, her family moved to Winthrop, Maine. She attended Winthrop schools where she met her high school sweetheart, Edgar. They were married April 28, 1951.

After high school, Joan graduated from Central Maine School of Nursing in Lewiston in 1950. She spent the early part of her nursing career at Augusta General Hospital. She then worked as the school nurse at Cony High School until her retirement in 1992. She enjoyed many hobbies including knitting, quilting, needlework, cooking and gardening. In retirement, she and Edgar spent many winters at their place in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Most recently, Joan got much enjoyment from watching the birds that came to her many feeders. She loved sitting in her back yard surrounded by the perennial gardens she spent many hours tending to over the years.

More importantly, she was our Mom, Nana and Great-Nana!

Joan is survived by her children, Alan Fontaine of Readfield, Pamela Schneiter (Robert) of Old Orchard Beach, David Schermerhorn of Durham, Linda Hall (Dean) of Sidney; her grandchildren, Jonathan Fontaine, Matthew McGrath, Andrew McGrath (Bridget Bagley), Timothy McGrath, Tristan Schneiter, Samantha Hall, Joshua Hall (Ellie) and Jacob Hall; her great-grandchildren, Erin Fontaine, Jack Fontaine, Rylee McGrath, Aubrey McGrath and Stella McGrath and her brother, Richard Stockford of Bangor.

Joan was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Edgar; daughter, Karen Schermerhorn; grandson, Nathan Schermerhorn and a brother, Donald Stockford.

Joan’s family would like to thank the staff at Hillside Terrace of Hallowell for their care of Joan during these difficult times.

A private visitation will be held for the family. There will be a graveside service in the spring.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website at http://www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com.
