Roland P. Bernier

WINTHROP – On Feb. 16, 2021 Roland P. Bernier was finally at peace after a struggle with congestive heart failure. His two sons who took care of him, Christopher and Shawn, and his wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (Ward) Bernier, were with him to the end.

Roland was born in Winthrop on August 23, 1935 to Roger O. Bernier and Dora D. (Fleury) Bernier. Roland graduated from Winthrop High School in 1953. That same year he joined the Marines where he served for 14 years until he was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant.

Roland worked at Shoppe Ford, Bridge Construction, Maine State Prison as a guard and various trucking companies driving ‘Big Rigs’. He took great pride in his work and retired from Superior Carriers after having a major heart attack.

Roland became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1974. Even though he was no longer active in the congregation, what he learned changed his views on life and family and impacted the decisions he made later in life.

Roland was a hard worker and provider for a family of five boys whom he so loved. He would always put family and friends before himself, willing to help a friend in need. He was quiet, never wanting to burden others with his own personal struggles. Even when dealing with physical challenges and in pain, he never complained. He was a simple man that just needed the simple things in life to make him happy. He loved his family even though it was difficult at times for him to express it. He was an avid book reader, he enjoyed building model trucks and was known for his unique sense of humor and telling jokes.

Roland was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Dora Bernier; and his two sons Roland P. Bernier Jr. and Todd A. Bernier.

Roland is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (Ward) Bernier; sons, Timothy S. Bernier, Christopher M. Bernier, Shawn D. Bernier and his wife Kimberly, Benjamin J. Bernier and his wife Alexandra; and five grandchildren, Ashley R. Bernier, Cassandra N. (Bernier) Gay and her husband Evan, Sophia L. Bernier, Brady L. Bernier and Jeannie McNicholas; and sister Barbara (Bernier) Corson and her children Mark Corson and Michelle Corson. And he will be dearly missed by Molly.

Our family would like to thank the following ones who did over and above for our dad and husband when we needed them the most;
