AUGUSTA – Willi A. Hartung, 90, a resident of Norway Circle, died Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, April 8, 1930, the son of Wilhelm and Marie Hartung.

He attended schools in Wiesbaden, Germany. After graduating in 1946, he attended Technical College and served an Apprenticeship in Radio and Electronics. He was a certified technician specializing in audio and large-scale public address systems.

On Dec. 21, 1951, he married Jutta Wissel of Wiesbaden, Germany.

Mr. Hartung left commercial employment to work as a civilian employee for the U.S. Air Force in Germany, and in June of 1956 came to the United States as an immigrant, together with his wife and their son Michael. He became a citizen of the U. S. in 1961.

Mr. Hartung and his family resided in Jefferson for 20 years and moved to Augusta in 1980.

He was employed by Vast, Inc. of South Bristol in various engineering capacities in the sonar and computer fields for 19 years. After the company closed, he managed a rope manufacturing plant for Crowe Rope of Warren for a brief period. He then joined Central Maine Power Company in 1976 as an administrative assistant for Maine Yankee. He soon transferred into CMP’s information technology department and retired as a vice president in 1991.

He was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where he had served on the church council and also as a deacon, lay preacher, and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the church choir for many years and had also sung with the Augusta Bicentennial Singers. He and his wife were also one of the founding families of the “Bread of Life” ministries in Augusta.

Mr. Hartung is survived by his wife Jutta Hartung of Augusta; his son Michael and wife Nikki of Londonderry, N.H.; his son Mark and wife Misty of San Jose, Calif., his daughter Monica Beckham of Casa Grande, Ariz; Royce Beckham of Crestview, Fla.; his sister Marika Valentin of Unkenbach, Germany, his sister-in-law Ingeborg Wissel of Murnau, Germany; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Following the wishes of the deceased, the body has been cremated, and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at a later date. Mr. Hartung’s ashes will be interred at Gracelawn Memorial Cemetery in Auburn.
