Alexandra “Lecky” Avore

FARMINGDALE – Alexandra “Lecky” Avore, 57, of Farmingdale died peacefully in her sleep Sunday March 7, 2021, following a long illness.

Mother, wife, loyal friend and longtime civil servant, she will be remembered for her strong will, big heart, athletic accomplishments and lifelong contributions to the Greater Augusta community. She was nicknamed “Lecky,” often mispronounced “Lucky,” and those who were within her tight circle indeed felt lucky to know her.

She was born in Augusta on Aug. 31, 1963, the daughter of Harlan John and Elaine Helen (Dmitrieff) Choate. She was the youngest of three sisters, following Victoria Diane and Sharon Beth.

She grew up on the west side of Augusta, attended city schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1981. She was a standout athlete in field hockey and track, earning varsity letters and establishing Maine state records in outdoor track as a sophomore and senior. She said she was happiest when playing field hockey, serving on the varsity team at Cony all four years.

Upon graduation, she attended Boston College, graduating (alongside future NFL star Doug Flutie) in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. While in Boston, she fell in love with her future husband, Scott Avore, also an Augusta native and a 1980 Cony graduate.

She went to work for the State of Maine early in 1986, and she spent her entire career in civil service, working first as a computer programmer, for a time in the Department of Human Services, then for 24 years as a legislative analyst for the Maine State Legislature’s Office of Fiscal and Program Review. In her career, she was known solely as “Alex,” which became her adult nickname.

In 1988, she and Scott were married. They had two children, Katherine Theresa Avore and Malcolm Arthur Avore, who were born nine days apart in January 1999. The Avores settled in Farmingdale, where their children attended Hall-Dale schools, and she was an avid supporter of her children’s various activities and sports, ranging from dance to soccer and tennis. She stayed physically active as well, working out regularly at the gym and playing tennis with her family.

Outside of her family, she was fiercely loyal to a lifelong group of friends, including Gigi Hatheway Atkinson, Tracie Young Carolin, Tina Reny, and Katie Daggett from Augusta schools, as well as Leslie Barnes from college. She was predeceased by dear friend and college roommate, Laura Andrews.

Asked what she thought she would be remembered for, she replied simply “I was left handed.”

She was predeceased by her father, who died in 1997, and her mother, who died in 2011.

She is survived by her husband, Scott Avore; and children, Katherine Theresa Avore and Malcolm Arthur Avore of Farmingdale; sisters, Victoria Diane Choate of Orlando, Fla.. and Sharon Beth Pratt of Maine; parents-in-law, Richard and Peggy Ayotte of Augusta; sister-in-law, Diane Godfrey of Aspen, Colo.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta.
