AUGUSTA – Daniel Gregory DuLon Stevens passed away suddenly on March 10, 2021. Dan was born in Augusta on May 16, 1948 to George Robert Isaac Stevens and Alice Morton Stevens.He was a 1967 graduate of Cony High School and 1971 graduate of Nasson College. Except for his time in college, Dan lived his entire life in Augusta with most of it in the home that has been in the family for nearly 100 years.Dan was a multidimensional man who enriched the lives of so many people. He never married, but had deep connections with family, friends, and community, by whom he will be greatly missed.Dan’s professional career included ten years with the Maine Legislature and twenty-five years with the Maine Education Association.Dan was a lifelong active member of the Episcopal Church; St. Mark’s and St. Barnabas’s churches in Augusta until they closed, and subsequently Christ Church in Gardiner. He served in many capacities in the church over the years. His faith was deep, constant, and provided great comfort to him.Dan served his beloved Augusta community with pride. His knowledge and expertise on all matters of historic buildings, culture, and citizenry will be missed. At the time of his passing, he was actively serving on the Historic Preservation Commission, the Historic District Review Board, and the Old Fort Western Board of Trustees. Previously, he served on the Kennebec Historical Society, Conservation Commission, Augusta Symphony Board, Maine Old Cemetery Association and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He will be remembered for the Halloween cemetery tours he gave around Augusta focused on eminent historical ghosts.An expert in the decorative arts, particularly American furniture, he worked for twelve seasons as a docent for Historic New England, guiding visitors through Wiscasset’s Nickels-Sortwell House. A wealth of knowledge about the British and Continental aristocracy, Dan was also a passionate Francophile. One of his most cherished memories was of months he spent living in Caen, France during his junior year in college. He often spoke of returning to Normandy one day. Sadly, that fond wish will not be realized.Dan was deeply involved in the early days of the Maine Lesbian Gay Political Alliance. He served as an early president and testified before the Maine Legislature in the 1980s and ’90s, in favor of bills to criminalize hate crimes and in support of gay rights. During the AIDS Crisis of the 1980s, Dan made it a personal mission to help those in need. He helped many people with AIDS secure legal, medical, housing, financial, and food assistance.Dan was keenly interested in genealogy having researched his family’s roots back to 16th century England. He was the family historian and keeper of secrets. He will be remembered by several nieces and nephews for traipsing all over Maine obtaining gravestone rubbings from long deceased relatives in sometimes precarious and abandoned cemeteries. Dan was an avid supporter of the arts. He loved the Portland Symphony and eagerly hosted a large group of friends and family for the annual Magic of Christmas concert.
Dan was predeceased by his parents; and his four siblings, Mary Roy, Margaret Stewart, Rebecca Lewis, and Jonathan Stevens. He is survived by his dearest friend Cindy Bastey, his sister-in-law Laurel Stevens; and his beloved nieces and nephews, Kathy Lambert, Chris Phair, Louise Collins, Annette Roy, Andrew Stewart, Mary Googins, John Stewart, Mark Stewart, Randy Lewis, Jeff Lewis, Wendy Porter, Amy Smith, Emily Griffith, Betsy Bradley, Jennifer Green, Michael Stevens, and Laurie Stevens. We will dearly miss the Christmas open house he hosted each year in his home that allowed us all to celebrate with him and each other. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, services will be announced at a later date.
