Mary Butman Mason

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Mary Butman Mason, 88, passed on Oct. 31, 2020, in Cocoa, Fla. with her son by her side. She was born April 23, 1932 to Georgie Ella (Fish) Butman and James Warren Butman in Readfield, Maine.Mary graduated from Kents Hill Preparatory School in Readfield. She enjoyed raising her children in their Readfield home where she spent her childhood, was a Girl Scout Leader, and loved being a member of the Readfield Ladies Rifle Club. Mary cherished spending family time during summers at the camp on the Swift River in Byron, where her husband grew up and at their summer cottage on Bay Point in Georgetown.Mary and her family moved to Connecticut in 1967 where she worked in Town Hall in Ridgefield, Conn. as the Town Clerk for several years prior to taking the position as the Head Legal Secretary for Judge John Dowling.Upon returning to Maine Mary enjoyed gardening, where she changed her plantings to match the seasons, was active in the Garden Club, volunteered at the Readfield Public Library, spent many years tracing her family heritage all the way back to John Alden, who came over to this country on the Mayflower, and was one of the last Readfield Grange Hall Masters. After retiring, Mary and Erlon headed out to Alaska in their camper, exploring the country while fulfilling their dream. Towards the end of their journey they returned to Maine for several years, becoming snowbirds between West Melbourne, Fla. and Farmingdale, Maine on the Kennebec River where they enjoyed watching the eagles soar while surrounded by nature. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Erlon F. Mason; and her son Mark D. Mason. She is survived by her daughter Heidi J. Mason of Gardiner and her son Merrill P. Mason and his wife Jean of Meriden, Conn., her stepson Daniel Hodge of Rumford; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.She will be interred in the spring at the Moose Hill Cemetery in Fayette.
