Should the dams on the Kennebec River be removed?

That proposal has been made as an amendment to the state’s Kennebec River Management Plan to allow endangered Atlantic salmon opportunity to spawn upriver. It includes possibly removing the Lockwood Dam and Hydro Kennebec Dam in Waterville owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, and it could mean the removal of two other dams, the Shawmut Dam in Fairfield and Weston Dam in Skowhegan. It’s a concept that’s dividing local officials, with the Waterville City Council voicing support for the proposal while the Winslow Town Council has taken a stance against it.
