Merle G. Michaud

HALLOWELL – Merle G. Michaud, 91, died March 24, 2021 at his home after a short illness, with his family by his side. He was born on Sept. 30, 1929 in Fort Kent. He was the son of Amanda (Paradis) Michaud and Edmund J. Michaud.

He was a graduate of Fort Kent High School. Mr. Michaud served full time in the Maine Army National Guard for 42 years. Merle was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallowell.

His passion for the outdoors was one of his greatest joys. He loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Family traditions included Memorial weekends fishing trips and yearly Thanksgiving hunting trips at his camp in the North Maine woods, T9R10. He canoed down the Allagash and St. John Rivers and enjoyed several months long fishing trips in Alaska. He also loved gardening, travel and playing card games for hours with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Reina (Pelletier) Michaud of Hallowell; daughter, Donna and husband Del Maynard of Hope Valley, R.I., son-in-law, Hank Simms of Villanova, Pa., daughter, Janice Michaud and husband Charles Hughes of Exeter, N.H., son. Edmund and wife Joyce Michaud of Auburn, James and wife Ann Michaud of Hallowell, daughter-in-law, Tammy Michaud of Kensington, N.H., son, Stephen Michaud and wife Kara of East Newport; and one brother, Arnaud and wife Joan Michaud of Clearwater, Fla. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Katë and husband Ehren Schimmel, Kevin and wife Kate Maynard, Christopher and wife Jillian Bouley, Anne and husband Coleman Peeke, Emma Hughes and husband Nicholas Rogers, Elizabeth Simms, Nathan and wife Siobhan Michaud, Benjamin Simms, Nicholas Michaud, Abigail Hughes, Renée Simms and Christopher Michaud; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Michaud was predeceased by his daughter, Paula Michaud of Villanova, Pa.; his brother, Joel Michaud of Manchester, Conn., and his three sisters, Etheline Shaw of Jackson, Mich., Lolita Virchow of Fryeburg and Joella Cormier of Southington, Conn.

There are no visiting hours scheduled. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date at Sacred Heart Church, Hallowell with burial with military honors following the mass in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
