Falmouth High School distance standout Sofie Matson has been named Maine Cross Country Gatorade Runner of the Year for the fourth time.
The 5-foot-9 senior was undefeated for the fourth straight season against Maine cross country competition last fall. She won the Cumberland County state qualifier with a time of 18 minutes, 8.85 seconds – finishing 26 seconds ahead of the field. But she missed the opportunity to defend her three Class A state titles when the state championships were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2019, Matson was the New England champion.
Matson also maintains an A average, plays the clarinet in the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, and participates in the Falmouth High debate team and school paper.
She will attend Columbia University in the fall.
