Arlene Marie Laliberte

HALLOWELL – Arlene Marie Laliberte, 95, of Augusta, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday April 4, 2021.

Born in Augusta Dec 30, 1925, she was the daughter of Felix Desjardins and Rose Tondreau Desjardins, the second of four children.

Arlene was a lifetime member of St. Augustine Church, a member of Les Dames de St. Anne, a member of the Oblate Fathers Charasmatic Group and an auxiliary member of Le Club Calumet.

Arlene was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister and aunt and her greatest pleasure was spending time with all her family and many special friends. In 1950 she married Lawrence Laliberte and they enjoyed 59 wonderful years together. She was very musical. She loved to sing and could play the piano, accordion, harmonica, violin and the spoons. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, reading and traveling.

Mom and Dad were very fortunate to do a lot of traveling during their retirement years. They took a few cruises and also a trip to Hawaii and a trip to Paris France which was very special to them.

Another of her special times was enjoying summers at their summer cottage on Dyer Long Pond in Jefferson where they enjoyed many family gatherings.

Her first job was working as a clerk in her father’s grocery store, Felix’s Market on Water Street in Augusta. Years later our father bought a grocery store named Laliberte’s Variety on State Street in Augusta and Arlene and the family worked there part time and then moved the store to her home on Jefferson Street and ran it for many years.

She also worked for LaVerdiere’s pharmacy store and then worked as a teller for Depositors Trust bank in Augusta. She also did a lot of volunteer work during her retirement years. She and my father delivered meals on wheels for about 20 years and volunteered with children with disabilities. She was also a Eucharistic Minister for St. Augustine Church. One of her greatest and proudest achievements was getting a high school diploma in 1979 at the age of 54.

In addition to her parents and her husband Lawrence, she was predeceased by her sister Loretta Eaton, her sister Ida Neault, her brother, Alcide Desjardins; and her grandson Lee Sthilaire; also a special niece, Diane Caron and nephew, Jimmy Desjardins.

Arlene is survived by twin daughters, Marianne Wiley and husband Dale of Tenants Harbor and Rosanne Woollett and husband Bruce of Owls Head, Jean Sthilaire of Augusta, Gloria Morrill and husband Tim of Richmond and Louisa Lajoie and husband Mike of Pittston and son, Perley Laliberte and partner Katy Marsh of Auburn, and a special daughter-in-law, Laurie Laliberte of North Yarmouth; and many nieces and nephews; and loved and enjoyed 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to say a special thank you to The Inn at City Hall in Augusta and The Hillside Terrace in Hallowell for all the help and care given to our mother during her stay there.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. on April 30 at St. Augustine Church in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers please donate in her memory to St. Michael’s Parish or a charity of your choice.
