Joanna Leavitt Burd

HALLOWELL – Joanna Leavitt Burd, 89, of Hallowell, died Friday April 2, 2021 in Augusta. She was born in Augusta on Jan. 21, 1932, the daughter of Joseph and Gladys (Bunker) Leavitt.

She attended Augusta schools and earned her BA from the University of Maine. For most of her career, she was an elementary school teacher.

Joanna had a wonderful sense of humor and wanted it known that, “peanut butter, bacon, and my pacemaker brought me to this age”.

Joanna was an avid bridge, Scrabble, and ping-pong player. Her many interests included reading, dancing, cooking, painting, gardening, and teaching. She enjoyed antiques, arts and crafts, cats, and anything nautical. Her greatest joy, however, was time spent with family during annual vacations at Popham Beach.

Joanna is survived by her daughter, Rillta Verrill of Manchester; granddaughter April Taylor of Augusta; great-grandsons Aiden and Logan Watson and three nephews.

All services will be private.

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer

her by;

And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

From Sea Fever by John Masefield 1902
