Mary Catherine Hall

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Mary Catherine Hall, 88, of Alpharetta, Ga. passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on April 20, 2021. Born and raised in Winthrop, Maine, she was the youngest of nine children.

She graduated from Winthrop High School and was active in theatre, singing and the church. After high school, she moved to New York City and attended Columbia University and the Bellevue School of Nursing. She entered the Army Nurse Corps as Second Lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Lawton in Seattle, Wash., where she met Donahue Hall. They were married on April 28, 1962. While raising a family, she fulfilled a dream of completing her education by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and a Master’s degree in political science from the University of Georgia in Athens. She taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia and later at Carthage College in Wisconsin.

Mary travelled widely, having lived in New York N.Y., Seattle, Wash., San Francisco, Calif., New Orleans, La., Boston, Mass., Melbourne, Fla., Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Racine, Wis., eventually settling in Athens, Ga. to raise her family. Later, she and her husband relocated to Alpharetta near their children. She enjoyed trips to Europe and Kenya. She was active in Democratic Party politics and was a dedicated member of the Athens Area Democratic Women for many years, including serving as President.

She was an avid gardener of flowers and shrubs and loved experimenting with landscaping. Throughout her life, she was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church.

Mary leaves behind her husband of 59 years, Donahue Hall; her three children, Michael Donahue Hall (Teri) of Durham, N.C., Katherine Elizabeth Duncan of Alpharetta, Ga., and James Andrew Hall (Cindy) of Suwanee, Ga.; as well as her seven grandchildren, Parker Donahue Duncan, Margaret Jean Duncan, Stephen Hyatt Duncan, Kaiser Ivory Hall, Ella Zahra Furu Blackmore, Jacob Hunter Hall and Sophia MacKenzie Hall.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Brigid Catholic Church in John’s Creek, Ga., on Monday, April 26 at 1 p.m., followed by interment in the Saint Brigid Catholic Church Columbarium.
