Donald W. Campbell

BELGRADE – Donald W. Campbell, 85, of Belgrade, died Thursday April 22, 2021 in Portland.

He was born in Mineola, New York, Sept. 24, 1935, the son of Alexander and Gertrude “Peggy” (McGillicuddy) Campbell.

Long Island was always in his blood, and after a degree from “the” Ohio State, including a well-earned spot on the Buckeye football team (to which few never heard the end), he did service in the U.S. Army before returning to his home turf for his advertising career and wife Arlene. The busy life of raising a family and business travel were offset by trips to Maine for his beloved fishing, although this time on a quiet lake rather than his usual ocean fare. Living vicariously through his Giants and Yankees, and his successful 30+ year walk in a 12-step program kept his heart young, but the end of his advertising career found him and Arlene moving to Maine and the quiet town of Belgrade. The quieter life included fishing, woodworking, gardening, and his never-ending battle with the bird feeder’s worst enemy, the squirrel. The loss of his first wife, Arlene, to cancer left a big hole in his life, so he sought to fill it by being a big part of his grandson, Chris’s, life, as well as finding a Washington County girl, Ione, to become his second wife. Lots of travel, his part in the Lion’s Club, the Sunset Grill, Giants and Buckeye football, and Red Sox baseball (so he said) were all parts of his later years. His role as an excellent caretaker for Arlene during her fight with cancer was once again needed when Ione suffered a stroke near 2010, leaving her unable to take on a few of the daily needs and Don never failed to be there. He was a good husband, a good father, and a good man.

Don is survived by his wife, Hilda I. (Croman) Campbell; his children, Craig Campbell and his wife Linda of Coram, N.Y., and Donna Lee and her husband, Stan of Waterville; his stepchildren, Terry Strout and his wife Cindy of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Tom Strout and his wife Sally of Northborough, Mass., John Strout of Gorham, Glenn Strout and his wife Nancy of Portland and Susan Strout and Bill Wight of Bridgton; his grandchildren, Christopher French, Jessica and Scott Campbell; two nieces he was very close to, Debbie and Lori as well as 14 stepgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta, on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. Following the guidelines of the State of Maine and the CDC, masks and social distancing will be required.

Arrangements are in the care of Lawry Brothers-Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church Street, Oakland. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website at http://www.familyfirstfuneralhomes.com
