Sister Patricia (Irene) Couture

WATERVILLE – Sister Patricia (Irene) Couture OSU, 92, Ursuline Sister of Waterville, passed away peacefully at Inland Hospital in Waterville. She was born Dec. 10, 1928, in Sanford, Maine, a daughter of the late Yvonne (Dubois) and Wilfred Couture. After attending Holy Family Elementary School and St. Ignatius High School in Sanford, she attended and graduated in 1954 with her B.A. from New Rochelle College. She then attended Boston College where she earned her master’s degree in 1960. She continued her education in France where in 1965 she received her French Certificate.

While attending college, she began her Novitiate in 1947 with the Ursuline Nuns in Waterville. In 1949 she began her Juniorate also in Waterville. Finally in 1952 she made her Religious Profession in New Rochelle, N.Y. Her great love of Catholic education led her to teaching Latin, English and Geometry in Springfield, Massachusetts, at The Ursuline Academy. She then went on to teach at Mount Merici Academy in Waterville, and at her alma mater, St. Ignatius High School, where she also served as principal. Sister Patricia also served as treasurer and Superior of The Waterville and Sanford Religious Communities. She loved all the students she served and her fellow Nuns. She was well known for her kind and gentle manner.

Sister Patricia is survived by her sister-in-law, Marianne Couture of West Allis, Wisconsin, and her cousin, Doris Gagne of Springvale, Maine.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Wilfred Couture.

Services at Ursuline Convent Chapel and committal at The Ursuline Sisters Cemetery in Waterville will be held at a later date and will be private.
