AUBURN – Nancy P. Longfellow, 89, of Auburn, Maine, passed away on April 26, 2021, after a long illness. She was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire, on May 27, 1931, a daughter of Daniel Roger and Irene Ball Pinkham.

She was a1949 graduate of Machias High School and then attended Beals Business College of Bangor, earning her degree in 1951. Soon after, she wed Thomas A. Longfellow in 1952 and they settled in Machias. She worked at Machias Savings Bank until 1954, when she started raising children, three in all, and after a move to Connecticut in 1959, the family moved back to Maine in 1967 settling in Farmingdale. This would be her home for the next 50 years. After the children were older, she started working for the State of Maine in the AFDC program, eventually serving as Director. Nancy retired after 20 years and started welcoming grandchildren with husband Tom.

Nancy was active in the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell and served as Deacon on the board of Directors for a State non-profit agency dealing with subsidized housing.

Nancy loved music and was a church choir member. She was a big fan of Sinatra and Tony Bennett, having seen them in concert. She enjoyed going to the big shows in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Much to the chagrin of her husband, Nancy loved to dance, but he loved her, so they danced! She was a friend to all and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She never trusted cats, however.

Nancy is survived by her three children, Linda Christie and her husband Tom of Dedham, Maine, Melissa Madden and her husband Matt of Lewiston, Maine, and Dan Longfellow of Boothbay Harbor; her sister, Barbara Condon of Hampden; her niece, Mary Condon-Johnson of Grand Junction, Colorado; her five grandchildren, Nick Christie, Chris and Abby Madden, Danny and Chandler Longfellow; and one great-granddaughter, Ava Longfellow.

Nancy’s visiting hours will be in the Knowlton-Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, Saturday, May 1, 2021, from 1-2 p.m., followed by a service in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Maine Avenue Cemetery, Farmingdale. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited following the guidelines set forth by the State of Maine and the CDC masks and social distancing will be required.
