Louise Edna (Nichols) Beale

AUGUSTA – Louise Edna (Nichols) Beale, 95, a longtime resident of Togus Pond, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2021 with her three daughters by her side. Many of her friends and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren fondly called her Mamie. Louise was born in Augusta, on Dec. 3, 1925, the daughter of the late Leon and Nettie (Benner) Nichols. Louise attended school in Augusta. She was often recognized for her feisty personality and was a true matriarch of her family.

She spent many years working at Augusta Television Company where everyone knew that she was the boss and you better listen to her. Louise and her husband, Julian, ran a successful TV repair/sales business until retirement in 1987.

After retirement they spent many hours on their Honda Goldwing Motorcycle traveling all over. One of their longest trip was to Florida to visit her eldest daughter, Gloria. She would often tell the rest of the family that she fell asleep on the back of the motorcycle on their many long trips across the U.S.

Louise loved to have a good time and was a supportive wife and mother to a family of sled dog mushers. If she wasn’t on the back of a motorcycle she would be exercising, spending time with friends, volunteering at the Worromontogus Lake Association, and attending parades throughout Maine cheering her husband and all the drivers of the Kora Shriner Karts.

At 92-years-old she made her first television debut on Maine Cabin Masters having the camp next to her home on Togus Pond remodeled for her family and for generations to come.

Louise was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Robert Nichols, Donald Nichols, Leon “Jimmy” Nichols, Norman Nichols and Gloria Poulin, her husband, Julian Francis Beale Jr., her first husband, Richard Merrill in 1950, her eldest daughter, Gloria Lambert, son-in-law, John Doherty, and grandson Thomas Winter.

She is survived by her daughters, Betsy Doherty, Betty Dix and her husband Dana, Cora “Tootsie” Keweshan and her husband Michael, and a son-in-law, Roland Lambert. Julian’s children, Judy Alley and her husband Richard, Julian Beale, III and his wife Brenda, and Fred Beale. Her youngest sister, Judith, and her husband David Abbott. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Mamie’s life will be held Thursday, May 13, 2021, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Public visiting hours will be 10-11 a.m., directly followed by the memorial service. Committal prayers and burial at noon will be held at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt.
