Hugh Libbey Awalt

AUGUSTA – Hugh Libbey Awalt, 85, died peacefully at home on May 6, 2021 after a short illness.

He was born in Lewiston on August 29, 1935, the son of Fred and Eleanor (Libbey) Awalt.

After childhood years in Peru and Washington D.C., Hugh graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel. He studied Forestry at the University of New Brunswick which led to survey work in Alaska and Canada in the late 1950s and early ’60s. Following his wedding in 1967 he settled in Augusta, working for the Maine Department of Transportation as a cartographer until his retirement in 1995.

Hugh knew the woods. He was an experienced black powder hunter of deer, moose and elk. He was active in the Ancient Ones, a pre-1840s living history club and taught generations of Boy Scouts about camping, primitive shooting and hunting safety – often while dressed in his favorite buckskins.

He was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Gardiner, where he played important roles in the vestry and anchored the choir with his confident baritone. For 25 years, he volunteered for Maine General Home Care and Hospice, transporting medical equipment and patients and giving quiet comfort to those in need.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marjorie (Doyen) Awalt; two nieces, Karen (Awalt) Mogenhan and Rachael (Hindman) Buchanan and eight nephews, Eric and Roger Awalt, Michael, Peter and Steven Mclaughlin, John, Lee and Mark Hindman.

A funeral service will be held later this summer, dates to be announced.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website familyfirstfuneralhomes.com.
