100 Years Ago: 1921

Those surprising springtime fairy forsythias, are blooming everywhere. Only a day or two ago and their bare, bleak branches branched out lean arms that gave no hint of even a bud. Almost overnight the pale yellow blossoms covered them from top to bottom. The air is full of delicate perfume where the fairies hide deep in the golden belle and any mortal attuned with their beauty may hear their sweet toned music and linger a moment and listen.

50 Years Ago: 1971

A special meeting of the Y.W. Wives will be held at 7:30  Wednesday May 5 at the Kate J. Anthony House, where Mrs. August Buschmann will talk about a YWCA project. Hostesses will be Mrs. Daniel Gatz, Mrs. Thomas Mower, Mrs. Edwin Mushlit and Mrs. Richard Norcross. Members are welcome to bring guests.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Smokey’s Greater Shows will be in Lewiston-Auburn through May 11 for an old-fashioned carnival, with proceeds to benefit The Public Theatre. Admission is free. This is the second year The Public Theatre has teamed up with Smokey’s to hold a carnival fundraiser. Smokey’s is New England’ leading provider of midway family entertainment. carnival rides, games and fun will be set up at Great Fails Plaza. There will be fireworks Friday. Pay one price days will be noted on Thursday. The Public Theatre is a not-for-profit organization that provides professional theatre productions and educational programs in Central Maine.
