Sister Madeleine Grandmaison, CSJ, 88, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2021at Mount St. Joseph, Waterville. She was born July 19, 1932, in Lewiston, the daughter of Willie and Annette (Chamberland) Grandmaison.

She received her elementary education under the Sisters of St. Joseph at Holy Family School in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School. She received a B.A. degree from St. Joseph’s College in North Windham; studied theology at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada; and obtained an LPN degree from CMVTI in Auburn.

She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Lyon on Feb. 2, 1951 and pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1953.

She served as a teacher at St. Joseph’s Day Care in Auburn; St. Anthony’s School in Jackman; St. Rose of Lima School in Chisholm; St. John’s School in Winslow; and Sacred Heart School in Auburn. She also ministered in Benin, West Africa, for a year and a half. Upon her return to Maine, she served for one year as Administrator of St. Joseph’s Provincialate in Winslow. She then became a Certified Nurse’s Aide and worked in Farmington Hospital; Mount Saint Joseph in Waterville; and Clover Manor in Auburn. As a LPN she worked at the Regional Hospital in Brunswick, Mount St. Joseph, Waterville, and at Klearview Manor, Fairfield. Later, she worked for Home Resources of Maine as PCA/Homemaker in the Lewiston-Auburn area. In Lisbon, where she lived for two years, she served as Chaplain of the Lisbon Senior Citizens. She organized an activity group in the apartment building where she lived and enjoyed visiting the shut-ins, an activity she continued when she moved to Waterville.

In 2003 she was missioned to Bingham where she did pastoral work. In 2009 she transferred to Mount St. Joseph where she resided until her death. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and counted-cross stitching.

She is survived by her brother, Fernand Grandmaison and wife Linda of Greene, and her sister Pauline Mandigo and husband Dale-Michael of Virgina Beach, Va.; along with many cousins; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers Robert and Bertrand Grandmaison.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph wish to thank the Staff at Mount St. Joseph and Maine General Hospice for their love and kindness as they cared for Sr. Madeleine.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Notre Dame Catholic Church 116 Silver St., Waterville on Wednesday, May 26 at 10 a.m. A visitation will be held before the Mass at 9 a.m. in the church. A burial will take place at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Lewiston.
