AUGUSTA – Harry Lee Strickland, 90, of Augusta, formerly of Belgrade, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at Maine General Medical Center. The son of Joseph Strickland and Evelyn (Parker) Strickland, he was born in Belgrade on August 8, 1930.

On April 27, 1949 Harry married June Ardene Thing in Belgrade, beginning a nearly 55-year marriage. Harry worked with Skip Hammond in the early years of Hammond Lumber Company. He then worked at Fort Western Tire Company in Augusta before starting his own business in Belgrade. First, he built a laundromat, later expanding it to include a diner. After many years operating the laundromat and diner, he sold the business and moved on to his final career as a school bus driver for SAD 47. He especially enjoyed his time carrying the handicapped children.

Harry was predeceased by his wife, June; his sister, Joan Stetson, and his brothers, Lyle, Joseph, and Allen Strickland.

He is survived by two daughters, Sally Wallace and her husband Barney of Kenduskeag, and Patty Young and her husband Cliff of Sidney; grandchildren, Jeremy Young and his wife Kristan of Virginia Beach, Va., Amanda Young and her husband Paul Tesseneer of Gardiner, and Tim Young and his wife Rebecca of Gorham; his special niece, Beth Strickland of Skowhegan; as well as his special friend and partner Gloria Bibeau of Augusta.

One of the great joys of his life was seeing his three great-grandchildren, Ty Young, Jacob Young and Sam Tesseneer.

Harry loved to go for rides, go out to eat, and to simply people watch.
