Cynthia Sproul

AUGUSTA – Cynthia Sproul, 71, passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2021 with her children by her side at Maine General Rehabilitation/Long-Term care following a courageous battle with cancer that lasted over 30 years. She was an inspiration to many that knew her battle over the years. Cynthia was born April 23, 1950 in Hyannis, Mass. She is the daughter of the late Stanley and Faye (Winter) Sproul. She attended Augusta schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1968. While at Cony, she was a member of the National Honor Society, was selected to Girls State in 1967, and played field hockey, gymnastics, and tennis. One of her greatest passions was dancing and she was selected to the dancing chorus of Chizzle Whizzle all four years. She discussed being a teacher assistant for dance as early as 6th grade. She also dreamed of owning a dance studio, which she accomplished while living in Florida later in life. Cynthia was also a member of the band and played the flute. As a child, Cynthia loved playing teacher and she went on to pursue this dream. She went on to further her academic career at the University of Maine at Orono, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Education. She later received her master’s degree from the University of Miami. For most of her professional career she was an educator and teacher at various schools/agencies in Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, and Texas. Cynthia enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s events and never missed a game, dance recital, gymnastic meet, theater performance, or anything else her grandchildren were involved in. She treasured the time spent with her loving family and enjoyed nothing more than having her family all together. She also enjoyed theatre, reading, and dancing, walking on the beach and cooking. She enjoyed sports and had a love for football. Cynthia had numerous friends, many of which were relationships that were formed from her childhood, and enjoyed Cynthia is survived by her two devoted children, Laura Lewis and her husband, Christopher of Augusta and Ryan Gallant and his wife, Jessica of Augusta; three brothers, retired Lutheran Pastor Rev. Edward Sproul and his wife, Elizabeth Sproul, of Spencer, Mass., Roger Sproul and Donald Sproul, both of Augusta; and her sister, Linda Small of Farmingdale. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Madeline Lewis, Meredith Lewis, Gabriel Lewis, Alexa Gallant, Casey Gallant and Jenna Gallant, all of Augusta; as well as many nieces and nephews.The family is thankful for the care she received from the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, Glenridge Long-Term Comfort Care, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston during her battle with cancer through the years. One of the messages she left to her grandkids about the most important thing she has learned in her life was “Not to give up!” and Cynthia certainly never did. Cynthia’s visiting hours will be in the Knowlton-Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta on Sunday, June 6 from 4 p.m. tp 6 p.m. Due to COVID restrictions, a private memorial service will be celebrated in Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church at 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta, on June 7. Interment will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta immediately following the service.
