W. Gregory Malloy

CHELSEA – W. Gregory Malloy, 63, of Chelsea, passed away unexpectedly on May 26, 2021, with family by his side.

Greg grew up in Hayford Heights in Farmingdale after his family moved there from Caribou, in 1963. He graduated from Hall-Dale High School in 1975 where he exhibited one of his foremost natural abilities – his athleticism. A varsity player all four years, he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. An MVP in all three sports, he received numerous awards, played on the 1971 and 1974 Class C State Champion Basketball team, and played catcher for the 1973 Class C State Champion Baseball team. Sports were then, as they were throughout his life, where Greg found some of his greatest joy. A talented and avid golfer, he played courses all over the country and enjoyed many years as a member at Natanis Golf Course. After graduating from Hall-Dale he spent some time at William Penn University in Iowa. When he returned home, eager to get back to playing on a team, he joined adult-league softball teams that he played on for years, with guys he would enjoy life-long friendships with.

He worked as a bartender and at a few different car dealerships before he found his spot at Gove Toyota in the mid-’80s and stayed on when it became Charlie’s Toyota in 1997. He was a manager there for nearly 20 years, before surprising everyone by retiring in 2015 – mostly, we suspect, so he could play more golf.

He was happiest when he was outside, and enjoyed fishing and hunting, kayaking, camping, snowmobiling, skiing, and turning his face up to the sun to soak up the rays. He loved the beach. He also loved family get-togethers, where he could often be found playing with the kids. He will be remembered for his humor, his charm, his quick-willingness to help anyone who needed it, his “Greg-isms” and famous one-liners, and his apparent fondness for “knuckleheads” as he warmly referred to most of his buddies, pals, and family.

Greg is survived by his partner, Marsha Adams, of Chelsea; stepdaughter, Shawna Wells and partner Jim McCully, of Augusta; sister, Michelle Malloy Johnson, of Farmingdale; niece, Amy Malloy and husband Chance Griffeth, of Brunswick, nephew, Daniel Malloy, of Augusta, nieces Kyrie Johnson of Rhode Island and Kayla Johnson of New York; great-nephews Tyler Malloy and Cameron Griffeth, both of Brunswick; great-nephew, Finn Malloy; step-granddaughter, Quinn Cotnoir; and special family friend “Aunt” Elaine Lacroix.

He was predeceased by his parents William R. and Bibiana T. Malloy; and brother, Kirkwood L. Malloy.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 11, at the Elks Lodge in Augusta, followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
