Ivy (Harland) Michaud

BANGOR – On June 2, 2021, Ivy (Harland) Michaud, of Bangor, passed away at a local hospital due to complications of a hip fracture. She was 99 years old.

Known to her family as “Ma” “Nana” “Nana Banana” and “Great Nanny”, Ivy was born in Horden, England, a northern coal mining town, on Nov. 9, 1921 to William and Mary Harland. As a young woman she joined the Royal Air Force to help in their efforts during World War II. During that time she met an American GI, Laurent “Larry” Michaud who she married in 1944. After the war, she joined her husband in Augusta. During her life in Augusta, she was a devoted member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella.

Ivy was a very hard worker and from 1971 to 1986 she worked at the Blaine House as the maid and cook for three governors and their guests. She also gave many house tours to visitors in her lovely English accent. Upon her retirement in 1986 she received an honorary commendation from the Maine State Legislature.

Ivy, always the snappy dresser, enjoyed dancing and cooking, she always made the best Thanksgiving gravy, even last Thanksgiving! She never got a driver’s license so she was an avid walker up until her last few years.

Ivy is predeceased by her husband, Laurent Michaud; her parents William and Mary Harland; her brother, Harry, her sister, Vera; and her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Michaud.

She is survived by her son, Laurent Michaud of Lakeland, Fla., her daughter, Anne Gunning and her husband James Gunning of Holden; her granddaughter, Sarah (Gunning) Monrraga, her husband Juan Monrraga and Ivy’s great grandsons Elijah and Silas Monrraga all of Bangor; and her granddaughter, Emily (Gunning) Prahl and her husband Charles Prahl of New Delhi, India.

Interment will be at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery Civic Center Drive in Augusta on Monday June 7 at 10 a.m. Enjoy dancing with the angels, Dear Ivy!
