Loell K. Rodgers

MORRILL – Loell K. Rodgers, 84, passed away peacefully while listening to her treasured music on May 27, 2021, after a fierce battle with dementia.

She was born in Rahway, N.J. on Nov. 2, 1936 the daughter of F. Barry and Edna (Moffitt) Koss. Loell grew up, married and started a family in New Jersey before moving to the Belfast area to pursue her dream of having a horse farm. She realized that dream with Fiddlers Green Farm, and for many years she happily raised her children and farmed. Loell worked at Weaver’s Bakery, then the Republican Journal in Belfast and then for many years, until her retirement as a typesetter for the Camden Herald.

To say Loell was passionate about music is an understatement. Music was part of her soul. She started piano lessons when she was 5 years old but went on to be highly accomplished with the fiddle. Truthfully, she could pick up any instrument and play. She most notably performed with the Belfast Bay Fiddlers for many, many years. She also sang in local choral groups. As Loell’s dementia progressed, she never lost her ability to play her fiddle with her friends or even learn new music. Towards the end, her fiddle friends would tune the instrument, and hand it to her, start a song and she would play unbelievably so.

Loell’s interests varied but generally she loved anything outdoors. She participated in Trek Across Maine for many years with her last ride being the year she was 69 years old. She showed horses in both English and Western classes throughout her life. Loell raced her canoe for many years in Belfast and Bangor. She loved skiing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing and especially walking (which she did daily); especially her one of many adopted dogs. Most importantly, Loell loved her family and doing activities with her grandchildren.

Loell is survived by her partner of 30 years, Ken Lane; children Scott Kennedy and wife Wendy, Karen Corson and husband, Raymond, and Wendy Canning and husband Chris; grandchildren Matthew, Kayla, Austin, Shauna, Sarah and Zoe; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Jan Stephenson and husband Keith; and several nieces and a nephew.

A celebration of Loell’s life will be held from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 16 at 261 Weymouth Rd. in Morrill, at Chris Simmon’s wedding venue. This venue has plenty of parking, and is indoor to allow for plenty of people and time to reminisce. This will be complete with music from the Belfast Bay Fiddlers and food and memories to get her friends and family from near and far, together, one last time for music and to smile. Please plan to join, for all four hours, or stop in to say hi to her family.

Memorial donations are welcome in lieu of flowers, to be sent to Bangor (or any) Humane Society, the Waterfalls Arts in Belfast; or Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter
