PITTSFIELD — Two Maine Central Institute class of 2021 graduates, Randall Starbird and Emelyn Hatch, both of Pittsfield, have been part of the school’s aviation program for high school and pre-college students working towards receiving their private pilot’s licenses.
Both are flying solo and have either taken their exams or are close to taking their exams for their private pilot’s licenses.
Starbird plans to study commercial aviation at the University of North Dakota’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.
Hatch plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this fall.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
