Harold Rush

AUGUSTA – Harold Rush entered eternal life at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on May 31, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born in Benedicta, Maine on Dec. 28, 1930 to Ralph and Anna Rush, the 8th of 11 children. Harold attended St. Benedict’s School, graduating in a class of 6 people in June, 1948 and entered the Navy soon afterwards. He was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., but traveled with the Navy to several ports in Europe, places he returned to as a tourist later in life.

In 1953, Harold married his high school sweetheart, Janet Cummings and they had a long 64-year marriage until her death in 2017. They ultimately made their home in Somers, Conn. where they raised four children, attended All Saints Catholic Church, and Harold was active in the Knights of Columbus, including serving as Grand Knight. Harold worked as a diesel technician for Tyler Equipment in East Longmeadow, Mass. for most of his career. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, golf, and country music which he could often be heard whistling as he worked.

Harold was a kind-hearted, outgoing man who enjoyed people of all ages. He was best known for his quick wit, hearty laugh, and his love of coffee. In retirement, Harold and Janet moved to Melbourne Beach, Fla. where he spent his free time golfing, socializing with friends, and visiting family far and wide. In 2007, they moved to Omaha, Neb. to be near their daughter Pam and her family. In 2014 they returned to their home state of Maine, residing in Waterville and then the Augusta Veteran’s Home.

He is survived by his children, Pam (and her husband Bob) of Papillion, Neb., Richard (and his wife Jean) of Bonita Springs, Fla., Robert (and his wife Janet) of Somers, Conn. and Mary (and her husband Andrew) of Parker, Colo.; as well as 12 grandchildren (Rachel, Randy, Ryan, Samantha, Cody, Tommy, Brendan, Ryan, David, Sarah, Leah, and Kayla); and 6 great-grandchildren (Jacob, Issac, Isabelle, Miles, Dagny, and Vienna). He was predeceased by his wife (Janet); parents (Ralph and Anna); and son (Harold); along with his siblings, Rita, Frank, Jim, Albert, Henry, Herbert, Gerard, and Valeria.

Harold’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Veteran’s Home in Augusta who took such good care of him throughout the COVID lockdown and during his last days.
