John F. McGovern

WINTHROP – Mr. John F. McGovern, 65, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening June 17, 2021, at home. He is the husband of Maria M. (Melendez) McGovern.

John was born June 19, 1955, in Philadelphia, son of the late Francis and Marie V. (O’Donnell) McGovern. He was a graduate of Upper Darby JS. He went on to receive his B.S. at West Chester University and masters from Villanova University.

John was a middle school teacher in Brunswick for many years. He later worked as a mental health professional.

He will always be remembered for his incredible sense of humor. He enjoyed being the center of attention. He also was a political fanatic, a vivacious reader and a “super hero nerd.”

He is survived by his beautiful wife, Maria; his son, Jonathan J. McGovern of Winthrop; his brother, Adam McGovern of New Jersey; his mother-in-law, Norma Melendez of Allentown, Pa.; his brother-in-law, Jose Melendez, his sisters-in-law Carmen Huertas, Veronica Rodriguez, Cindy Melendez, and Omari’s Melendez. He was also survived by his five cats whom he loved.

John’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Francis Xavier Church, Winthrop on Wednesday, June 23, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
