AUBURN — More than a dozen tenants were displaced Monday after fire swept through the apartment building at 68 High St.
Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Fifield reported Tuesday that it appeared 14 people who lived at the six-unit building were unable to stay in their homes after the early morning fire that likely started on the second floor caused heavy fire and smoke damage to that floor and significant smoke damage to the third floor.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal investigated the blaze along with a local fire inspector. As of Tuesday afternoon, the state office hadn’t released a cause for the fire, Fifield said.
The fire was reported shortly after 5:30 a.m. and despite full occupancy of the building there were no injuries.
A firefighter went to the hospital with a knee injury, Fifield said.
A cat found on the third floor was rescued by firefighters who were searching for occupants of the building. The cat was unresponsive until firefighters administered oxygen, which appeared to revive the pet.
The animal’s owner took possession and planned to take it to an emergency veterinary clinic, Fifield said.
