MONMOUTH – Philip R. Witherell, 94, a resident of Monmouth, died Monday, July 26, 2021, in Skowhegan. His family remembers him as a generous, selfless, hardworking, loving son, brother, father, grandfather and a loyal friend. He was born in Winthrop on March 21, 1927, the son of John King Witherell and Phyllis (Ryer) Witherell. He attended schools in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth Academy, class of 1945. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. On Nov. 7, 1952, he married Avis Gove in Winthrop. She passed away on March 17, 2011. Philip worked as a fancy stitcher for the shoe industry and also worked for Chick’s Orchard later in life. Phil had a great passion of harness racing, going to the racetrack and traveling the fair circuit. He enjoyed all things baseball; coaching, managing and umpiring for Little League, Babe Ruth, town teams and high school ball. In his words: “Well, I’ve always had three loves – family, harness racing and baseball. I just never figured out which one came first.”
Philip is survived by his son, Brett Witherell of Monmouth, two grandchildren, Jason Hubbard and Meghan Hubbard, a son-in-law, Jim Bartels, a brother, Earle Witherell of Acton, a sister, Annette and husband Romeo Fortier of Jay and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Avis G. Witherell, a daughter, Tanya Hubbard, a son, Kevin Witherell, and a brother, Arthur H. Witherell.
