Hallowell’s “Downtown-to-Woods Scavenger Hunt,” is to run from Saturday, July 31, to Sunday, Aug. 15.

The two-week event has been organized by Vision Hallowell, the Hallowell Conservation Commission and Kennebec Land Trust.

People can visit some of the many businesses that have opened recently or reconnect with old favorites downtown. Hallowell’s Vaughan Woods has been overcrowded recently, so the groups look to introduce the community to other outdoor Hallowell places, like “Little Egypt.”

The hunt is free, noncompetitive and suitable for all ages, so families can go at their own pace over the two-week period. There will be a prize drawing at the end of the event for participants who log five or more downtown and five or more open space questions.

Prizes include one of four $40 gift certificates to sponsoring Hallowell businesses (Ciccarelli’s Gelateria, Maine Local Market, Scrummy Afters Candy Shoppe, and Traverse Coffee Co.) or a copy of the newly-published “Take a Hike!” hiking guide from the Kennebec Land Trust.

Participants can turn in a completed paper form or submit photos of their adventures online, or do a combination of both. Paper forms are available at Hallowell City Hall, Hubbard Free Library, Ciccarelli’s Gelateria, Maine Local Market or Traverse Coffee Co. The form also can be accessed starting Saturday, July 31 via facebook.com/VisionHallowell.

Completed forms can be dropped off at the same locations on or before Sunday, Aug. 15, and the online version must be completed by 8 p.m. that day.
