Alice G. Patterson

PITTSFIELD – Alice G. Patterson, longtime resident of Pittsfield, Maine, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Friday, July 16, 2021, at Eastern Maine General Hospital. She was 90 years old, just a few weeks short of her 91st birthday.

She is survived by her sister, Carmille Shaw Reed, her sons, Patrick (Carol) and Gregg (Elaine), grandchildren, Michael Patterson (Laura) and Dana Patterson Farrar (Ken), and great-grandchildren, Elisa and Tory Patterson and Aislin and Carys Farrar.

Alice was predeceased by her parents, Guy and Bertha Shaw, her beloved husband, Edward Patterson, son, Edward Jr. and siblings, Dorothy Shaw Porter, Margaret Shaw Starbird, Kenneth Shaw, Winifred Shaw, Clayton Shaw and Ernestine Shaw Emery.

Alice’s life was filled with the love of family and friends. She always said that her three sons were the focus of her life and she gave them love, support and values that laid the foundation for their future success. In addition to her immediate family, she loved her wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Alice was extremely creative and enjoyed knitting, sewing, ceramics, quilt making, painting and cooking. Adults and children alike enjoyed her home-made donuts and over-filled whoopie pies. And she loved her books—borrowed by the bushel from her beloved Pittsfield Public Library—which she consumed in large print once she retired.

She had a deep commitment to the value of education demonstrated by her lifelong love of Maine Central Institute. She graduated with the class of ’48 and the school and her classmates were always a big part of her life. She served on the alumni board for many years and was named to the MCI Hall of Fame in recognition of her decades of service to the school.

Alice always worked hard to help support her family, first at the Northeast Shoe Shop in Pittsfield and later as a home activities coordinator with the State of Maine providing advice and support to hundreds of needy families around the state.

She enjoyed her last few years at the Redington Memorial Home in Skowhegan where a fabulous team of caring, committed professionals kept her healthy, happy and stimulated.

A graveside memorial will be held on her birthday, Friday, August 13, at 2 p.m. in the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield, at the Patterson family plot beside her husband, Edward, Sr. and her son, Edward, Jr.
