William “Bill” W. Burgess

AUGUSTA – William “Bill” W. Burgess, 76, of Augusta died Aug. 4, 2021, after a lengthy struggle with dementia.

He was born in Hallowell on April 15, 1945, to James K. Burgess, Sr. and Frances Woodside Burgess.

Bill graduated from Hall-Dale High School, class of 1963, Augusta School of Business, 1964-1966, and Southern New Hampshire University in 1968. He worked as controller at Kennebec Valley Medical Center from 1968-1984 and Maine Municipal Association from 1984 until he retired in 2011. Bill cultivated good friendships from his time at the hospital, playing for the softball team for years, and playing poker with good friends and coworkers. At MMA Bill promoted the use of new technology in accounting and was known as the “wizard of spreadsheets.”

Bill was a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church, formerly Prince of Peace in Augusta where he served as the treasurer and financial secretary for many years. He was active in the men’s prayer breakfast, served as an usher, participated in Sunday School and Bethel Bible Study, helped promote stewardship and generosity, and very much enjoyed church retreats at Rockwood, Moosehead Lake. Bill participated in Très Dias of Maine, served as treasurer and on team. He found good fellowship and friendship in his reunion prayer group, Cobbossee Reunion Group.

Bill was the most die-hard Red Sox fan you ever met. He enjoyed following the team through their years “under the curse” until they achieved World Series victory. Bill was an avid collector of memorabilia, baseball cards, and baseball caps. He enjoyed attending games at Fenway Park and supported the Portland Sea Dogs as a season ticket holder for many years.

In addition to work, church, and baseball, Bill loved his family. Being one of five children, Bill was close to his parents and siblings, enjoying Saturday baked bean suppers cooked by his mother and regularly attending birthdays, holidays, and family reunions. Bill was blessed to be a husband, dad, and “Gramps” to his four grandchildren.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, a brother, James K. Burgess Jr., and a sister, Sally Anderson.

Bill is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brennan Burgess of Augusta; three children, Wendy Burgess Tardiff and her husband Tim of Augusta, Kathleen Mills and her husband Ryan of Woodbridge, Connecticut, and Daniel Brennan of Augusta; four grandchildren, Devin Tardiff, and John, Helen, and Caroline Mills; two sisters, Janis Parent of Bowdoinham and Peggy Leach and her husband Paul of Belgrade; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
