Virginia D. Stark

AUGUSTA – A glorious sunset marked the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Virginia D. Stark, or as she was better known to all, “Meme”. Virginia passed away on August 4, 2021, at the age of 99 after spending the day surrounded by her family. Virginia was born in Orono, ME on June 2, 1922.

She grew up in a close-knit community by the Penobscot River called “The Basin”, a place she cherished, where neighbors were either related or close friends, and everyone looked out for everyone else. This was a theme ingrained in her for the rest of her life, as she was always one of the first to reach out to anyone in need.

She graduated from St. Mary’s High School as valedictorian, and would have loved to go to college, but poverty and the need to help support the family did not allow that.

While she was working in Bangor, she met a handsome U.M.O student, and from that first meeting both knew they were destined to be together. She married Douglas A. Stark in 1953 and they were inseparable until his death. Once Virginia married, her husband and her children were everything to her. She was totally devoted to her kids, and once saved us when our house was on fire at great risk to her own life. She was not only a dedicated mother, but her door was always open to all our friends and neighbors.

She worked many years at the Farrington School cafeteria and cared for the children at the school like they were her own. Her ultimate joy was in her grandchildren. She and “Papa” loved having them around and their home was a second home to them. There would always be each one’s special treat in the refrigerator and Meme had every take-out restaurant in Augusta on speed dial for them. The grandkids often brought their friends over, and they were treated like part of the family as well.

She was predeceased by her mother, Helen O. Doll, her siblings George Doll, Elaine Doll, and Karl Doll.

She is survived by her son, Douglas K. Stark of Augusta, her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Barry Williams of Gardiner, granddaughters: Heather Genest, Holly Jordan and her husband Mark, Haley Williams and Ian, grandson Scott D. Williams, and 4 great grandchildren: Camden Genest, Rocco and Louie Jordan, and Sailor Deforge.

The family would like to thank the staff at Augusta Rehabilitation where everyone referred to her as “a sweetheart”.

In lieu of flowers, please spend time with your family doing something she loved to do—go out to eat with your loved ones and enjoy the day together.

There are no planned visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM Saturday August 14th at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta, ME. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME.
