I want to comment about the recent column by Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (“Mainers deserve better than failed attempts at leadership by Democrats,” Aug. 5). It seems that she has one eye closed and the other focused on money. Jobs, jobs, jobs. What about people?

She praises Republican governors who did not take steps to curb the spread of the virus but instead focused on keeping businesses open. Look at Florida as a good example. Their hospitals are being overwhelmed with patients. Their rate of infection is soaring.

But then look at Maine. Our rate was falling due to the foresight of the present administration’s action taken to restrain the spread of the virus. Did it hit our business community? Yes, of course it did; it was bound to! But, did it save lives? It seems that it has. But now with the new strain of the virus and the reluctance of some people to take the vaccine, it is surging again.

I am so disappointed that some of our politicians are so focused that they cannot see that there are others out in the world that do not share their point of view and demonize those that are not in lock step with their point of view.

It is unsettling to see that behavior as it seems to be like other places and times in the world where one point of view is the only point of view which does not allow for dissension. That is not the America that I believe in.
