HALLOWELL – Samuel S. McKeeman Jr., 77, of Second Street, and formerly of Camden, died Aug. 12, 2021, at Northern Light Mercy Hospital, Portland, after an extended illness.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 29, 1944, the son of Samuel S. McKeeman Sr. and Esther M. (Saltiel) McKeeman.

Sam spent a lifetime exploring the world through adventurous travel and improving the world through his work with the states of Delaware and Maine in addition to his individual enterprise.

Sam’s travels always included adventure, nature studies, and immersion in the local culture; traveling companions always knew that they could rely on Sam to make the trip a success. His trips to Northern Alaska, Australia, Greenland, Svalbard, Norway and Southwest United States are legendary. Trips with his brothers will remain in memory for a lifetime.

Following a short career in public education in the United States and Australia, Sam worked within the Pennsylvania Justice System for three years. For seven years, Sam worked at the highest level of the Delaware state government training state employees, particularly in the area of organizational processes and improvements.

The family moved to Maine in 2000 and Sam began a new career with the state government in the areas of training, process improvement, program development, and related tasks. Sam worked with a wonderful group of people in both the Bureau of Human Resources and the Department of Transportation.

In addition to his public sector work, Sam did private training and process improvement work in many states, local government, federal government, and private/non profit agencies. This included work in Mexico and Bosnia, and groups from Japan, South Africa, Ukraine, Vietnam and Venezuela.

Sam stood tall for truth, justice, and equality for all.

His wife, Lisa Lee Layton McKeeman, predeceased him.
