As a board member of the Kennebec River Alliance, I would like to thank Maine Water for hosting a facility tour on July 22. It was the first of a three-part summer education series focused on the benefits and shared resources of the Kennebec River. During the beautiful day along the Kennebec, many friends and supporters of the river were treated to a great tour of the Maine Water facility in Skowhegan.

Maine Water’s Skowhegan facility provides clean, safe drinking water for approximately 8,000 Skowhegan residents, and over 70% of this water comes from the Kennebec River. Attendees were able to learn about the infrastructure and process used for sourcing water from the Kennebec River, view the reservoirs, and receive a detailed tutorial from Maine Water Company employees concerning the water treatment process. Afterward, Maine Water Co. employees were on hand to answer any questions.

I think it is important that we all remember how critical this river is to our region and our state. I welcome every opportunity to listen, learn and discuss ways to make sure all stakeholders are part of a positive discussion about the future of the Kennebec River.
