HALLOWELL – Alice Isabel (Stewart) MacKenzie passed peacefully from this life on August 19, 2021, with her loving family by her side. She was born in St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada on Jan. 11, 1926, and was the second daughter of Roderick Gilvary Stewart and Annie Hill (MacKenzie) Stewart. Having graduated from St. Peter’s High School, she earned an R.N. degree at Glace Bay General Hospital, passing the Tri-Provincial Exams. She travelled to New York City, NY, worked at Columbia Medical Center (Sloane Hospital) in Ob/Gyn for five years. From there she went to Calgary, Alberta, Canada to work at the Associate Clinic for a year until called home by her father’s death. She was invited to live with her aunt and uncle in Brookline, Mass., while working at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During this time, she met her husband Franklin Daniel MacKenzie, who was about to be discharged from the USAF. Married in 1957, they happily had three daughters: Susan (Michael Donihue), Laura, and Jennifer (Melissa Cotter). Their home was in Needham, Mass., where they remained until Frank’s retirement in 1995. They moved to Hallowell, Maine, in 2000 to be near grandsons Colin and Ross Donihue. They so very much appreciated watching the children grow. Knitting, quilting, rug braiding, and crossword puzzles were her hobbies. For the past seven years, she and daughter Laura had been sharing crossword puzzles over the phone weekly between Cincinnati, Ohio, Phoenix, Ariz., and Hallowell, Maine.Isabel was predeceased by her parents; sister Donna Thurgood (Frederick), and brother Alexander MacKenzie Stewart (Helen).
