GARDINER — A fire at a six-unit Central Street apartment building Wednesday night displaced one tenant, but firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading through most of the other apartments.
Firefighters from Gardiner were joined by those from five surrounding communities who responded to a call for mutual aid to extinguish the blaze, which damaged two apartment units — on the first and second floors — but left the other four units of the building undamaged, according to Gardiner Fire Chief Rick Sieberg.
No one was injured in the blaze at 79 Central St., nor did Sieberg believe any pets were lost to the flames.
“Nobody was hurt, thank goodness,” he said Thursday. “When crews first got there, they had real heavy fire on the second floor, they did a good job getting in and getting at it. The roof is even still intact. The guys did a good job.”
One of the damaged units was vacant, while the other was occupied by tenant Paul Batty. Sieberg said Batty’s apartment sustained heavy damage and is not livable. The American Red Cross and city were working to try to help him find another place to stay.
The building is owned by Susan Giampetruzzi.
An investigator from the Office of State Fire Marshal determined the fire cause to be accidental, from a lamp upon which something had been placed, which caught on fire.
