The Alzheimer’s Association invites Mainers to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in one of seven Walk to End Alzheimer’s events on four weekends in September and October.

The association plans to gather in person, and it will continue to offer options to take part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s online and in area neighborhoods. The health and safety of participants, volunteers and staff continues to be the association’s top priority as it monitors the pandemic and makes decisions about event details.

“Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we,” said Drew Wyman, executive director of the Maine chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, according to a news release from the chapter. “We are working with everyone to make to make sure they have a powerful and moving experience at their chosen Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Many of our constituents are at higher risk when it comes to COVID-19 and we know that our volunteers and walkers appreciate our commitment to keeping all involved healthy and safe.”

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease — a leading cause of death in the United States. More than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

There are 29,000 people in Maine living with the disease and 46,000 caregivers, many unpaid family members.

“Families facing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia need to know that we are here for them, and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s shows them they are not alone,” Wyman said.
