Clifford C. Cox

AUGUSTA – Clifford Cuvier Cox of Winthrop passed peacefully at the Maine Veteran’s Home on Sept. 3, 2021, at the age of 79. Born to Walter Cox and Lucille (Putnam) Cox in 1942, Clifford grew up in the family home in North Monmouth. Lettering in football, basketball and baseball, Clifford was full of Mustang Pride when he graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1960. After his time in the service, he returned to Monmouth and married Shelley Pulsifer who he met at a local dance. They soon moved to Winthrop and raised a daughter. Clifford held a few jobs over the years, mostly odd shifts. He eventually returned to school and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Augusta in 1979. He then settled into a job with the United States Postal Service where he worked until his retirement in 2000.

Through the years, Clifford, known to family as “Fife”, loved golfing at Springbrook, a passion he shared with several of his family members. He especially loved hunting down and collecting lost golf balls. His other hobby, besides drinking coffee, was playing the ponies at Scarborough Downs and Lewiston Raceway with his betting buddies.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Richard Cox, sister, Norma (Cox) Fides, sister, Arlene Jacobsen, sister-in-law, Louise (McDonald) Cox, brother-in-law, Richard Foster, and his brother, Kenny Cox. He was also predeceased by his pride and joy, his Golden Retriever, Brandon, and the love of his life, his cat, Smudgie.
