Donald Paul Barrieault

LAKE MONTEZUMA, Ariz. – Don was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on March 29, 1935, to Amie Barrieault and Mamie Cyr Barrieault who owned and operated a small store. Don grew up in Skowhegan and excelled in sports, particularly football and skiing. He graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1952 and enlisted in the United States Air Force looking for adventure. After completing his basic training, he was transferred, much to his disappointment, to Ft. Wingate, New Mexico, where he served for four years as a radio controller patrolling for suspicious aircraft and was ultimately promoted to staff sergeant. It was in the nearby town of Gallup, New Mexico, that Don met his wife, Yolanda Lee Slade and married her in September of 1956. They had five children, Lora Massa, Monica Langlois, Greg Barrieault, Shayne Barrieault (Kimberly), and Michele Harding (Terry), before divorcing in 1969. While they were together, they enjoyed flying small planes and skydiving. Don spent most of his life in the southwest but frequently visited his beloved hometown of Skowhegan. He spent much of his adult life working in, and eventually inheriting, his grandfather-in-law’s trading post in St. Michaels, Ariz., located on the Dine (Navajo) reservation. He came to love the Dine (Navajo) people and developed a good relationship with them. His interests included golfing, boating and fishing with his best friends on Lake Powell, investing and trading in the stock market, traveling and seeing new things, and visiting his children and grandchildren in various states. After Don retired from Two Story Trading Post, he purchased and moved to a home on a golf course in Lake Montezuma, Ariz. He enjoyed the warm weather and watching the golfers on the course. Unfortunately, Don developed dementia and the last year and a half of his life was spent in an assisted living and VA facility in Utah. He passed away in Layton, Utah, surrounded by his family.Don was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Pauline, a nephew, his niece, Ann and a granddaughter, Taylor. He is survived by his five children, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and two nephews. We will truly miss him even though we are so happy that he is finally whole again and free from the debilitation that is Alzheimer’s. A graveside service will be held for Don on Friday, Sept, 17, at 10 a.m., at the Calvary Cemetery in Skowhegan, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://www.alz.org or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation at http://www.alzfdn.org.
