Walter E. Smith

MADISON – Walter E. Smith, 79, predeceased by his parents, Waldo and Mary (Brown) Smith, and his sisters, Gertrude Reynolds, Mary Balboni, Agnes Zanellato and Gloria Tibbetts. He is survived by his sister, Beatrice and her husband, James Paul, a close cousin Patricia Smith, and several nieces and nephews.

Walter grew up in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and attended schools there. He enjoyed riding his bike, fishing and especially tagging along with his sister, Beatrice, to Saturday night hops.

He had many friends that he hung out with and talked fondly of them often.

Later in life Walter moved to Maine where he held many jobs. He was well known in the Skowhegan / Madison area and was always ready to greet someone with a fist bump or a peace sign. He also enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, road trips all around the state of Maine with his sister Beatrice, and also travelled with a group to see the Grand Canyon, Nashville, and Mount Rushmore.

The last few years Walter lived in a home with many wonderful caregivers looking after him. The team leader, Susan, also grew up in Bridgewater so she and Walter became good friends, sharing stories and memories of growing up in the same town.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements under the care and direction of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, Skowhegan.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Special Olympics Maine
